Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) extends civil rights to individuals with disabilities. Built upon a body of existing legislation, particularly the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Act seeks to provide "a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities."
The act provides for equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency for disabled individuals by providing access to employment, public accommodations, transportation, public services and telecommunications.
For information, please contact Patricia Burks-Jelks at (931) 393-7226 or email her at pjelks@utsi.edu.
