HR0128 Human Resources Development

As a result of employee feedback from the Employee Satisfaction Survey, the university revised its Human Resources Development Policy HR0128 to encourage supervisors and managers to plan for 32 hours of professional development every year for faculty and staff as part of an overall career development plan, including conferences and programs both outside and within the university.

To receive credit for classes taken, please complete the Request for Additional Training Credit.

Faculty and staff are the university's most valuable resource.  Investing in professional development builds a strong University of Tennessee Space Institute.  If you have any questions, please contact Patricia Burks-Jelks at (931) 393-7226 or email pjelks@utsi.edu.

UTSI Staff Training and Development Program

To Regular Faculty and Staff:

As identified in the HR Workplace Satisfaction Survey results, a UTSI Human Resources Staff Training and Development Program has been established effective immediately.

All regular employees are eligible to participate in this program (temporary and student employees are not eligible).  Those eligible will be provided funding for up to two (2) courses per fiscal year and up to a maximum of $200.  This applies to courses offered at UTSI such as those offered through the Continuing Education Department.  Exceptions to the guidelines will be considered.  Justification for the exception is required at the time of the request. This program will not be used to pay for courses in conjunction with the University’s fee waiver program.

When the application is completed and signed by both the employee and the department head/supervisor, it should be submitted to HR for review and final approval.  The application will be returned to the employee and if approved, it should be presented at the time of registration. Cost of the course will be billed to the UTSI HR Staff Training and Development Program. Printed copies are available in the Human Resources office.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact pjelks@utsi.edu or call ext. 37267.

UT Career Development Fund

Financial assistance from the University of Tennessee Career Development Fund (CDF) enables employees to attend professional development programs. The CDF committee reviews requests and approves funding based on the guidelines.

Several changes to the CDF were effective November 1, 2008. One change affects the eligibility of exempt university employees. In the future, only non-exempt, regular, full- or part-time may participate. The other change is that CDF will only fund participation in conferences that take place in Tennessee.

Since 1977, the CDF has been supported by annual gifts from employees.  Decreased donation rates necessitated the recent policy changes. Contributions to the Career Development Fund can be made online at  http://www.tennessee.edu/giving or at http://givetout.tennessee.edu or by contacting Brian Hardy, assistant vice president for annual giving at 865-974-5439 or by e-mail at brianhardy@tennessee.edu.

To read more information about the Career Development Fund, its guidelines, and eligibility requirements, please visit the website at http://www.tennessee.edu/cdf.

To apply, please complete the Career Development Fund Application and return to the UTSI Human Resources office at least four weeks prior to the activity/program. If you have any questions, please contact Patricia Burks-Jelks at (931) 393-7226 or email pjelks@utsi.edu.
